Smoked Gouda & Apple Grilled Cheese (Print version)

Smoky Gouda and crisp apple slices melted between buttery golden-brown bread.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough bread or country-style bread
02 - 4 oz smoked Gouda cheese, sliced
03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

→ Fruit

04 - 1 small crisp apple, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, cored and thinly sliced

→ Optional Additions

05 - 1 tsp Dijon mustard
06 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

# Directions:

01 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Ensure even coverage to promote golden browning.
02 - Place bread slices butter-side down on a clean cutting board or work surface. If using Dijon mustard, spread it on the unbuttered side of two slices.
03 - Arrange half of the smoked Gouda slices on the mustard-topped or plain bread slices. Distribute apple slices evenly over the cheese, then cover with remaining Gouda. Sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper if desired.
04 - Top each sandwich with the remaining bread slice, buttered side facing outward. Press gently to adhere the layers.
05 - Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula. Flip when golden brown and cook until the second side is golden and cheese is fully melted.
06 - Remove sandwiches from heat and let cool for 1-2 minutes. Slice diagonally and serve immediately while warm.

02 -
  • Mediumlow heat is your friend. High heat burns the bread before the cheese melts
  • Slice your apples paperthin so they soften while the cheese melts
  • Pressing gently with the spatula helps everything melt together evenly
03 -
  • Grate some extra Gouda into the apple layer. It melts and binds everything together
  • Use a cast iron skillet if you have one. The heat distribution is unbeatable
